Interview: Temple of Blood
This last week or so, I've had the pleasure of interview an seminal band in Christian metal scene. The band, Temple of Blood, agreed to do an interview with me! If you guys like, oh, I don't know, Iron Maiden or Megadeth, then you'll probably like Temple of Blood. The band has been around for over 15 years now. So in this interview we talk about their newest member, the new album and some bigger local bands in their area. I hope you enjoy!
Could you give a quick background on the band?
Sure. Garth Lovvorn (bass), Lance Wright (drums), and I (Jim Mullis) started playing together in late 2001. I had written a few songs and wanted to put together a band to release them. I also want to hone my chops so we played a lot of cover songs in those early days. In 2006 we finally released our debut album Prepare for the Judgement of Mankind. We got a lot of great reviews for that one and sold out fairly quickly. Then in 2008 we released our follow-up "Overlord". It was also very well-received and people really noticed the progression in the band. After that release the band entered a difficult period of family challenges, line-up changes, and side projects but material was written and rehearsed for the third album A Show of Force. Recording for that release is still underway, and we are very proud and excited for everyone hear these new songs!
What is the band's full discography?
- Prepare for the Judgement of Mankind (2006)
- Overlord (2008)
- A Show of Force (TBD)
Where did the band's name come from?
"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own."(NIV). The band name "Temple of Blood" came from the idea of our bodies being temples of flesh and blood to God.
The band has been compared to acts such as Megadeth, Annihilator, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. How do you feel about that?
I think that's not too far off, but truthfully we probably have at least 100 metal bands that influenced us all musically. I never wanted Temple of Blood to sound like a clone of any band, and our albums tend to have quite a bit of variety on them. We explore mostly thrash metal and old school US power metal, but also technical, death, and doom metal at times. Anything to keep the songs interesting!
A few years ago, your longtime drummer departed. He was replaced by David Keeton correct? How has that experience been so far?
It's been awesome! David lives a few minutes from me and it makes jamming really easy. He plays with a lot of energy and has great drum fills. He does a lot to support the band and help us keep moving forward. Our previous drummer Lance works in a recording studio and unfortunately was too busy to continue playing with us. We will always use him to record though and he will always be a friend of the band.
Are you guys working on a new record?
Yes we are! It is taking a long time to get it all recorded, mostly because of family commitments and line-up changes, but I strongly believe this upcoming album A Show of Force is our best material. I really think we will win some new fans over with this release. It's faster, more intense, more technical, and has stronger and more aggressive vocals than before. I don't think any of our old listeners will be disappointed at all!
What is the current lineup?
Lead Vocals, Rhythm/Lead Guitar - Jim Mullis (CAULDRON BORN)
Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals - Garth Lovvorn (CHAOS INCEPTION, ex-FLESHTIZED)
Drums, Backing Vocals – David Keeton
Lead guitar (studio recording) - Andre' Corbin (ex-HELSTAR)
Are you guys currently on a label?
No. We will be evaluating offers after the album is completely recorded.
You guys are from Huntsville, Alabama correct?
Yes, that's correct.
What are some other Christian metal and hardcore bands in your area? Isn't Mortal Treason and Misery Chastain from there?
Yes. Garth knows more about some of that scene than I do though. I know Misery Chastain's music and really enjoy them a lot, but unfortunately they are inactive. We've had some other good Christian metal bands here before like Golgotha, Mindsize, Within the Fire, and 3 Times Driven but unfortunately I also don't think they are active.
Is there anything else you guys would like to say?
Thank you so much for this interview and thank you to everyone for your support! If you live in the area, come out to one of our shows! We are still working on a new album and I apologize for the delay. Believe me, I will do my best to get A Show of Force released as soon as possible and I can't wait to see what everyone thinks about it!
What an awesome interview if I do say so myself! I was blessed with this awesome opportunity. I hope you guys enjoyed this as much as I did! Go check out the band's social media: Facebook, Twitter, and their official website. God bless you all and have a great day!
