This week I got to talk to the ladies in GFM, also known as Gold, Frankincense & Myrrh, a Christian hard rock/post-hardcore band. Here it is:
TBD: Who am I speaking to? (For the readers)
GFM: This is Maggie - bass, keyboards, vox- of GFM. I'm the middle sister.
TBD: Could you give a quick background on the bands?
GFM: GFM started as a cover band in 2011, playing Skillet, Petra, Casting Crowns, just a wide variety of Christian rock songs. We then decided to write some originals for fun and found out it was much better to play your own music. We officially became an original band in 2014 and the buzz just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
TBD: So your influences I read range from Skillet to Casting Crowns to Petra (that one surprises me and makes me laugh). Are there other like Christian metal or Christian hardcore bands (heavier than Skillet) that influence you guys?
GFM: Yeah, so we've gotten into music that is a lot heavier. We listen to bands like Demon Hunter, Memphis May Fire, Disciple, Red. And we listen to bands like Asking Alexandria, Bring Me the Horizon, Motionless in White, Of Mice and Men, which are not Christian, but are big influences of ours. You could say we've moved on from Casting Crowns and Petra. :)
TBD: I found your guys Bandcamp with the song "Darkness". Do you have other releases? Maybe an upcoming release?
GFM: We actually have our first EP, "Death of Giants" that was released December 2015 available on iTunes and Spotify. You just search Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh and it will pop up on both sites. It is also available for purchase on our website: www.thegfmband.com.
We just finished recording our first album titled "Identity Crisis" in Nashville with Jake Jones and Justin Forshaw from RMS Studios. It is heavier and more metal and more raucous than our EP. It's release date is still being determined, but it will be released in the upcoming months. So I would definitely be on the look out for those songs.
TBD: Are there plans for it to come out on a label? I saw you've met guys from Red and ex-We As Human so maybe a label like Atlantic or Essential?
GFM: We aren't currently searching for a label and we aren't that concerned about having one at this time. So for now we are independent.
TBD: Are there any other Christian heavy bands in your area?
GFM: I don't think there are any heavy Christian bands in our area, but we know that 7th Surrender is a band from the state of Florida who we have shared the stage with. They're pretty raucous, so they would be great to reach out to as well.
TBD: How would you guys describe your style?
GFM: We jokingly say our style is kind of a Barlow Girls meets Slipknot. We go by hard rock, but we are basically metal, with some post hardcore influences thrown in. So I don't know if there's a genre name that really captures who we are.
TBD: Another thing I would like to give you guys a thumbs up on is, GFM is a band that consists of sisters! I love it when there are family bands or mostly family bands! There's on of the mostly family bands in Arkansas called Every Knee Shall Bow and I think it helps them get together to practice, seeing how 4/5 guys live in the same house. But I'll ask, does the band effect you guys as a family? In a positive or negative way.
GFM: Being in a band with sisters definitely affects the family. In every situation, there's going to be good and bad aspects, but I think that with GFM, the positive outweighs the negative. Like you mentioned with practices, I couldn't even imagine what it's like having to get a bunch of people who have their own lives together to practice. All we do is say, well it's time to practice, and go to our living room. I think it also gives us a new level of intimacy and closeness as sisters. You have that bond as a sister and then you have that bond of a band mate and you throw them together and you literally never leave that person's side. Let me tell you, sometimes the weirdness is overbearing. :D But it gives us so many memories that most people don't have with their family.
TBD: What artists/bands have you been listening to lately?
GFM: My playlist has consisted of Bring Me the Horizon, Memphis May Fire, Asking Alexandria, Of Mice and Men, Red, PVRIS, Melanie Martinez, and so many others that if I told you, you'd never get to the end of this answer.
TBD: Is there anything else you would like to say?
GFM: You can find us on all social media (@thegfmband - Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Periscope, Reverbnation) (Gold Frankincense and Myrrh - iTunes and Spotify) and you can visit our website: www.thegfmband.com.
