Interview: Solus Deus
This last week I interviewed the Death Metal band, Solus Deus! While, as I unfortunately suspected, not a Christian band, they still have a semi-spiritual lyrical concept (first EP mainly) and a few members are Christians. Either way, check them out! They are legit! Anyways, away we go!
TBD: Who am I speaking to? (For the readers)
SD: Jey - Vox
TBD: Could you give a quick background on the band?
SD: Yeah man started with me and Wayne getting together just riffing some shreds out, we were in a band together before there was a bleed the sky, so after BTS we always wanted to get back together in a band. We also knew we wanted Austin to beat the hell out of the tracks with his illness so we got him on board then our publicist hit up Rocky because he's always been an axe man we looked up. Tony (bass) as been a homie for a long time too so we asked him even thought he plays guitar he was down to jam the bass for us. And boom Solus born haha
TBD: What was the band before BTS called?
TBD: That's a cool name. Now I've heard rumors about full-length. Are these rumors true?
SD: Yeah man! Early 2017. We are in the process of writing new shreds for the Full length rumors are true haha.
TBD: Sick! After that release, are you guys going to tour or just play locally?
SD: After that release we are planning on doing some shows not sure yet on how many of it will be locally or on a tour
TBD: Alright. The band's full discography is the Solus Deus EP, The Bloodtrail, and the upcoming The Plague, correct?
SD: That is correct my man.
TBD: I gotta tell ya man, The Bloodtrail is probably one of the best EPs I've ever heard!
SD: Wow man. That means a lot very honored you feel that.
TBD: You guys seem pretty spread out across the states. I think I read most of you live in California and Rocky lives in Arkansas, so is it hard to get together and jam?
SD: Yeah man. We don't jam like normal bands we send riffs over the Internet get to the studio with limited time and get er done, haha, and then for shows we practice a few times the days before and wrek shop and have fun.
TBD: Well the reason I ask is that this is kind of the way music is heading. There are bands currently that just send tracks to each other over the Internet. Two that come to mind off the top of my head are Phinehas and Solamors. But their music sounds super solid! As does your guys! So I was just curious.
SD: Yeah man why sacrifice the talent for location and it's real easy nowadays to write like that.
TBD: This next question is purely personal curiosity. With some faith based lyrics, a few Christian members, and the name Solus Deus, which I read means "Only God", do you consider Solus Deus a Christian band? Cause the way you describe your personal relationship with God is the Dave Mustaine way. (That's what I liken it to)
SD: Solus is not a Christian band although your right some of us do have a faith in creation. We are not all Christian and some of us (me) are little on the outskirts of what "Christians" would consider being Christian I don't like to fake the funk and I question everything, we're all different and don't judge so some would say we are not the cookie cutter ya know what I mean. We are people and want the best for everyone no matter race religion creed \m/ music is spiritual and want to connect with all walks of life. I hope that helps.
TBD: That helps a lot! I was just curious. Speaking of Megadeth, I've heard that you guys got signed to Dave Ellefson's EMP Label Group.
SD: Yes, yes, yes so very stoked to be on that label with someone we look up to for sure! So honored to be apart of something so great.
TBD: Yeah that seems like it would be amazing! What gear do you guys use?
SD: Peavey amps and ESP guitars.
TBD: I know the answer to this next question, but for the people who don't, have you guys been in any other notable bands that people may know?
SD: Yes, yes sir. Wayne and Austin Bleed the Sky (Nuclear Blast Records) Rocky has been in Living Sacrifice, Soul Embraced, Evanescence those are the big ones.
TBD: See that's how I found you guys. Rocky's career is nuts! I found you guys cause I'm a fan of LS and I follow Rocky and the rest of those guys careers.
SD: Hahaha yeah Rocky is the man he's so talented. Yeah everyone Wayne, Austin, Tony and me all have been LS fans forever!
TBD: Yeah man! Is he the one that plays turntables on "Thug Metal"?
SD: Hahaha, nah that's our magic man Ben Schigel from Spider Studios.
TBD: Nice! I was just curious cause it seems like Rocky could play anything! Anyways, what artists/bands have you been listening to lately?
SD: Haha he can play anything man! I've been listening to Oceano, Holy Guile, new Megadeth, Tech N9ne and P.O.D. that's how I get down. Lol
TBD: Yeah I love me some P.O.D. as well! Is there anything else you want to say?
SD: Nah man. Just be on the look out. We will be trying to set standards while having fun writing music!
TBD: Alright! Thanks for talking to me!
SD: Always man thank you for taking your time to talk to me! Hit us up anytime!
TBD: Alright! Talk to you later!
SD: Fo sheezee homie!
And that was Solus Deus! Amazing! I need to throw a thank you to Jey and his wife, (and SD's publicist) Collette Collins and the gents in Solus Deus. Both are awesome people! Follow the band on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and listen to their music on SoundCloud, YouTube, Spotify and Bandcamp and check out their official website!
P.S. Happy Delayed Birthday Jey!
