Interview: Gnashing of Teeth
Here's an interview with a sick Christian brutal death metal, called Gnashing of Teeth! (Not to be confused with Gnashing of Teeth on the Living Sacrifice Tribute as discussed later). Here we go!
TBD: Who am I speaking to? (For the readers)
GOT: Both members of the band haha Izzy Powers (vocals) and Nathan Baird (all instruments)
TBD: Could you give a quick background on the band?
Izzy: Well it started around the end of june, at this time i was the worship leader along with my father and mother. To make a long story short, the pastor wanted to kick my mother off the worship team, which i did not accept, so i stepped down along with my father and left the church. Nathan had had the idea of band for awhile, but after telling him what happened at my church, along with some deep spiritual discussion, we decided to "worship God at home" without the church, because its a building that makes the church, its the people. And since we've both have had struggle with church already, and how they've treated us, the name kind of fit the feeling.
Nathan: Yep, that's about it...haha
TBD: Interesting. So are you guys one of those "Anti-religious Christian bands"? Or just "Anti-Church"?
Izzy:Well none of the above, we have nothing against the churches, its just that we desire an atmosphere in which we could worship god freely without some of restriction or agenda.
TBD: Hm. That's really interesting. The reoccurring theme with Christian metal and hardcore bands seems to be rejection by the Church because their playing "devil music". But I guess that's not the case in this situation.
Nathan: Well, what is music that worships God? Is there like a specific genre or way that we're supposed to worship? Even if there was, we still wouldn't follow it. Worship, along with a relationship with God, is a personal aspect, and because of that, nobody should be told to worship God a certain way. One reason people call it "devil music" is because yes, the lyrical themes in this style of music do talk about Satanism and other bad stuff, and it goes undetected under the noses of those who listen to it. What we're doing is playing the same genre of music but with a Christian message: of love, hope and redemption, trying to reach those who listen to the same music with Satanic themes.
TBD: I agree 100%. I'm sorry, 150%! So you have the "Atonement through Sanguinary Execution" track and a cover of Broken Flesh's "Valley of Mass Crucifixion". And you have an upcoming release don't you?
Izzy: Yes, we're currently writing new material lol.
TBD: Nice. You plan to put that out on a label?
Izzy: Probably not this next release. We aren't even sure what label we want to sign to haha.
Nathan: Right now, we're just focusing on getting our music out there for everyone to hear.
TBD: Well what labels would you prefer to release the stuff on?
Izzy: Vicious Instinct or Rottweiler
TBD: Yeah Rottweiler is a great label! To be honest I haven't heard of any of those other labels. Have you heard of SkyBurnsBlack Records?
GOT: No we have not haha they good?
TBD: Yeah they have a lot of cool bands. They have Saul of Tarsus, Wickeds End, Parallax Withering, and Elgibbor. Both Rottweiler and SkyBurnsBlack have done some split albums (I mean that when they both release an album).
Izzy: That's pretty awesome! We'll definitely keep those two labels in mind.
TBD: Anyways, I've been curious about this. There was a Christian metal band back in the day called Gnashing of Teeth (they were on the Living Sacrifice Tribute in 2001). I was wondering if there was any connection to that band.
Nathan: Haha nah man, there's no connection. We didn't even know there was another band with the same name until Kevin Tubby (guitarist of Broken Flesh) told me that the other Gnashing of Teeth had already been around for a long time.
TBD: Oh you guys are in contact with the Broken Flesh dudes?
Nathan: Eh, barely haha it's mainly just me liking their stuff on Instagram and Jacob and Brandon returning the favor sometimes. Kevin messaged our Facebook page telling us about the other Gnashing of Teeth.
TBD: Huh. Alright. If you go back into my Instagram page, i met those dudes at AudioFeed. They are sick dudes!
Izzy: Haha we actually recorded our cover of "Valley of Mass Crucifixion" when we heard that Jacob and Joshua left the band, as a kind of tribute. Broken Flesh is one of our favorite bands and biggest influences.
TBD: Yeah man! Have you heard the Christian brutal death bands like Death Requisite, Abated Mass of Flesh or Revulsed?
Nathan: Izzy's heard of Death Requisite lol and my other band Atrocity just put out a two-track promo featuring Matt from Abated Mass of Flesh on the first song!
Izzy: Listening to it as we speak haha.
TBD: Lol no shame there. Oh yeah I forgot about that. Is Atrocity a Christian band too?
Nathan: Yes, it is because I'm in it and I'm writing everything, instruments and lyrics. Atrocity is my one-man studio project. It's a different style of metal than what I write for Gnashing of Teeth, called slam which has simple but crushing riffs, fast drums, and deep guttural vocals. Atrocity is for when I want to play slam, Gnashing is for when I want to play technical stuff. Lyrically, the stuff I talk about in Atrocity is about world and personal issues through a Christian perspective. Izzy writes most of the lyrics for Gnashing. Atonement through Sanguinary Execution is a detailed description of Jesus' death and basically praising and thanking him for going through all of it for us.
TBD: That's very honorable. I didn't know Atrocity was a one man studio project. I though it was a full band. Cool. Other than you guys and Atrocity, Are there any other Christian metal or hardcore bands in your area?
Izzy: As far we know, we are the only christian metal band in our area. Everyone other band from our area are not christian.
TBD: Interesting. I can't say that's a first but it's close. So what artists/bands have you been listening to lately?
Nathan: I've been listening to Guttural Secrete, Inherit Disease, and Defeated Sanity a lot lately.
TBD: Oh dude! If you like Defeated Sanity, you will love Revulsed! It's Konni of Defeated Sanity, Sheldon D'Costa of InExordium, and Jayson Sherlock of Mortification, Horde, Paramaecium, etc.
Nathan: Yeah dude, I've heard of Revulsed. I just never got around to actually listening to their stuff lol I definitely will now!
TBD: Yeah. Alright is there anything else you guys would like to say?
Izzy: Expect a 3 track EP soon, definitely, other than that, I think that's it.
Nathan: Same, EP coming soon!
TBD: Alright. Well thanks for doing this guys!
So that was Nathan and Izzy of Gnashing of Teeth! Go follow those dudes!! Check them out!
