Interview: Blessed by the Broken
This week I got the chance to talk to the Christian Nu-Metal/Beatdown Hardcore band, Blessed By the Broken. They are totally awesome! Check 'em out! Here we go!
TBD: Who am I speaking to? (for the readers)
BBTB: Andrew Greene, I play guitar and do backing vocals for Blessed By the Broken.
TBD: Could you give a quick background on the band?
BBTB: I joined around November of 2014, but our vocalist, Dylan Barham and previous guitar player, Zachary Barham are brothers, and started writing music at an early age. They ended up naming the band sometime around 2011-2012 with a completely different line-up.
TBD: What is your guys full discography?
BBTB: Well, we started recording an EP last year as a Metalcore band, with me playing drums, Isaiah Kelso playing Bass and doing cleans, Dylan on vocals and Zach on guitar but Isaiah ended up leaving (on good terms) and so we had to completely change our lineup, and our sound. There's still a couple tracks from the early Hypocrisy EP that are floating around online, but the stuff were really trying to get out there is our newer music, starting with our "Ignite" single.
TBD: Wait, you said you played Guitar, you play both?
BBTB: I was their drummer originally, but once our old bassist left, I had switched over to guitar, and Zach switched over to bass while we searched for a new drummer.
TBD: That's awesome! Where are you guys from?
BBTB: We all live in Franklinton, North Carolina. It's a really small town outside of Raleigh.
TBD: How do you guys describe your sound?
BBTB: We're trying to fit in with the hardcore scene, with choruses that hit hard, but a lot of our influences come from bands like Korn, Kublai Khan and Sworn In. We try and find a good mix between heavy beatdown choruses and bouncy nu-metal riffs.
TBD: The songs I've heard, sound close to the like of Christian Metalcore bands like Haste the Day and Onward to Olmpas. You ever heard of either of them?
BBTB: I've heard of Haste the Day, they're pretty good, haha. We also take a lot of influence lyrically from Christian bands like For Today, Impending Doom, etc.
TBD: Yeah those bands seem to be popular choices among the Christian Metalcore/Deathcore/Hardcore scene. Those bands are amazing! Anyhow. Have you guys been in any other bands that people may know about.
BBTB: Not really, Zach and Dylan have played in a couple small bands I know, but this is the first serious band we've all been in.
TBD: I see. Are there any other Christian heavy music bands around where you guys are?
TBD: I'll have to check those guys also live near Advent right?
BBTB: We do, they're up out of Greensboro, NC. Hopefully we'll play a couple shows with them soon.
TBD: Sick! Speaking about shows, when your guys EP comes out, are you guys going to play locally or tour around?
BBTB: Nothing is really set in stone yet. We're hoping our EP will be finished by summer, and if everything plays accordingly then we'll do an week or so tour up the East Coast.
TBD: Nice! Could you come to Indy while your on the East Coast?
BBTB: If everything works out, we will definitely try our best!
TBD: Nice! Is the EP coming out digitally, physically, or both?
BBTB: Both. We'll have our EP on digital services like Spotify and Amazon Music and Bandcamp, and we'll also have physicals made.
TBD: Awesome! I can't wait for that! What artists/bands have you been listening to lately?
BBTB: Me personally, I've been jamming For the Fallen Dream's Heavy Hearts. I've also been listening to a lot of blackened hardcore. Like Young and in the Way, Weekend Nachos, and Oathbreaker.
TBD: I have heard that term "Blackened Hardcore" a lot recently. Specifically that band Slaves BC. Another band I always thought should have had that term was Zao. Have you heard of either of those bands?
BBTB: If we're thinking of the same band, I've definitely heard of Slaves. I'll have to check out Zao though.
TBD: Zao is old school. They were one of the first Christian Metalcore bands. Unfortunately like the entire current lineup are no longer Christians. Kinda of a bummer. Alright is there anything else you'd like to say?
BBTB: Thanks you for taking the time to interview us, we really appreciate it! To anyone reading, be on the lookout for our new EP around summer time, and check out our latest single over on our Facebook.
TBD: Thanks for doing this dude! I had a blast doing this! Anytime! And when you guys get an official release date, send it to me and I'll post it on my website.
BBTB: Will do! Take care!
TBD: You too!
Well that's our good buds in Blessed by the Broken! Thank you guys again! Find their music on their bandcamp link and follow them on their aforementioned Facebook as well as Instagram!
